Koutoubia Mosque

The Koutoubia is the largest mosque in Marrakech, and its minaret — roughly 77 metres tall — remains the most visible point in the medina, thanks to an unwritten rule that no building around it may rise higher.

Built in the 12th century under the Almohad dynasty, it served as the model for the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat. Its name comes from the booksellers (koutoubiyyin) who once traded at its foot.

The prayer hall is not open to non-Muslim visitors, but the surrounding gardens are freely accessible and give the best view of the minaret, especially in late-afternoon light.
